The 2003 Metal Gods Tour

After two weeks of heavy work on our visas for the US, we finally made it and flew to Chicago on April 25th – one day later as expected, but still in time to made it to the first show, Ralf, Stefan, Tom, Mat plus drummer Randy Black and of course our longtime friend and FoH Achim Koehler. Of course jetlagged and tired, we arrived at Chicago airport, where our bus plus driver Reggie was waiting, to take us to the “House of Blues” venue. We had an hour time between our arrival and the show, which is indeed like a nightmare, but the final quote I can remember was “another 2 minutes for Primal Fear” from the stagemanager.

Chicago – House of Blues
Our setlength was only 30min. today, because the curfew was very early. We started straight without an introduction with “Angel in Black” and we fought all little sound and stageproblems through to the final song “Final Embrace”. The around 1500 fans liked us and gave us a great response. A little Testament and a little Halford and then straight into our beds of course after introducing us to our labelmates from Immortal - we share the bus & crew together during the tour.

Cleveland – Agora Theatre
The world looks different after a night of sleep and the weather was a lot of better than the day before in Chicago – around 20 degrees. The venue looked like the place they filmed the Spinal Tap movie, but a positive huge stage. Again around 1500 people showed up and after Metal Mike’s “Painmuseum”, “Carnal Forge” and “Behemouth”, we started at 8.10pm. Today with introduction, gear problems at Tom’s side was repared short before the set – Stefan’s gear working smooth - we really had a great time on stage and sensational loud response from the crowd. We rocked through “Angel in Black”, “Battalions of Hate”, “Nuclear Fire”, “Chainbreaker”, “Fear”, “Eye of an Eagle”, “Silver & Gold” and “Final Embrace” – cool show, great performance by Randy Black and of course all the other guys. Ralf voice was in a great shape and we were really happy about our show. “Immortal” had great show too and it was Testament’s last show before 3 show break for them. Reason for a nice backstage party after their set. “Halford” play a very interesting set, with a lot of interesting songs. Later!

Detroit/Pontiac – Clutch Cargo
Strange how many huge buildings, even entire streets are unoccupied in Detroit. The Clutch Cargo looks or even is an old church – very interesting building. Big church windows, which gave a little hard time, cause it looks like daylight in the venue as we started. The stage was smaller than the on the last shows. We had a soundcheck, that´s why the shows was going smooth, except Mat´s trouser broke, which causes no musical problems to the set. Good response by the fans during the set. Great response after we finished the set!

Travel Day / Canada
Not a lot of sleep on our trip to Canada. Some people remind the border controls like like the ones in former Eastern Germany – never expected this, but they have their reason. The entire tourparty got a great deal at the Best Western Hotel and we joined. Great Thai foot and a nice trip through the city. Everybody’s talking about SARS here, we saw nothing about this in the city, except on the TV – later we watched a movie recommended by Achim, “Spider” by David Cronenberg, which turned out a nightmare – wrong movie on a cool day! Sleep!

To be continued!
